This week we are hearing from an organization dedicated to helping our community access the resources it might need in a variety of situations. The Southern Caregiver Resource Center, established in 1987, is “the leading provider of caregiver support services for San Diego County, serving over 100,000 clients annually with a wide variety of support services that include education, case management, counseling, respite care and support groups.” The Center connects caregivers who care for adults with chronic and disabling conditions. This week, the Center will be giving us a talk on how to organize medical documentation and why it is important.
Our reading this week focuses on healthy aging overall as well as some fascinating information about Blue Zones!
SCRC offers services to family caregivers of adults with chronic and disabling conditions or diseases. With a team of highly-qualified, professional staff, SCRC supports families through a full range of programs and services.
To be eligible for services, a client must be caring for an adult with a cognitive-impairing condition that occurred after the age of 18 (for example: dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, traumatic brain injury, Parkinson’s disease), or someone age 60 years and older in need of assistance with daily living activities. Services are for residents of San Diego and Imperial counties.
All services come at no cost to the family caregiver, with the exception of the Together Care Respite Program. Both home and office visits are available by appointment. Below, I am including some brochures they provided to me to learn more about them and in case you are interested in their services after the presentation.
Perhaps some of you have seen the recent documentary that came out on Netflix about the Blue Zones, places in the world where a larger percentage of the population lives to be over 100. You can see them in the map below. One of them is located very close to San Diego!
One of the surprising things about the Blue Zone research was that often reduced stress and a sense of community play an even larger role than diet or exercise. You can learn more about each Blue Zone location and the lessons that studies have taken from each community here:
Their website also provides lots of great resources, like this section with recipes that take less than thirty minutes to make and follow the Blue Zone guidelines for longevity:

Even if we don't live in a Blue Zone, we can still learn from these locations to help us work toward long, healthy lives. According to Harvard Health, these ten steps will help us have the longest, healthiest lives possible. Many of them are probably things we have heard before and are already doing!
Don't smoke.
Be physically active every day.
Eat a healthy diet rich in whole grains, lean protein, vegetables, and fruits. Reduce or avoid unhealthy saturated fats and trans fats. Instead, use healthier monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats.
Be sure to get enough vitamin D and calcium.
Maintain a healthy weight and body shape.
Challenge your mind.
Build a strong social network.
Protect your sight, hearing and general health by following preventive care guidelines.
Floss, brush, and see a dentist regularly. Poor oral health may have many effects. It can lead to poor nutrition, pain and possibly even a higher risk of heart disease and stroke.
Discuss with your doctor whether you need any medicine to help you stay healthy. These might include medicines to control high blood pressure, treat osteoporosis or lower cholesterol, for example.
